Royal House of Montenegro

Make the impossible be

For more than three centuries, the House of Petrović-Njegoš has stood alongside Montenegro through its struggles, its dignity, its independence, and its resilience.

Today, as Montenegro steps forward into Europe, we believe that heritage must not remain frozen in memory alone. It must become a living force one that serves culture, dialogue, education, solidarity, and the preservation of human connection. Through the Foundation of the Royal House of Montenegro, we build projects that honour both the past and the future. This is not a return to history.

It is a commitment to continuity.
Nikola, Boris & Altinaï Petrović-Njegoš

Preserve the past,
building the future

Montenegro is the smallest state in the Balkans, 630,000 inhabitants for 14,000 km². Between mountain and sea, it is remarkable for the beauty and diversity of its environment, but also for its cultural diversity, preserved through the turbulent history of this part of Europe.

It is the only country in the Balkans to have resisted the great Empires and succeeded in maintaining its independence. Throughout this history, it developed a culture of resistance and heroism, summed up by the verses of the great poet Prince Bishop Petar II Petrovich Njegos: "Neka bude sto biti ne moze" (Make the impossible be).

As one of the next candidates expected to join the European Union, Montenegro occupies a strategic position at the heart of Europe’s future cultural and geopolitical landscape.

The Order of Danilo I

Founded in 1853 by Prince Danilo Petrović-Njegoš, the Order of Danilo I became one of the historic distinctions of the Balkans and Europe.

For over a century, it honoured figures who contributed to diplomacy, culture, public service and humanitarian action. The Order was historically associated with the royal and diplomatic circles of Europe, including ties with the courts of Britain, Russia and Italy.

Following decades of exile and historical interruption, the Royal House of Montenegro now seeks to restore the Order’s living mission for the modern era. Today, the Order recognises individuals and institutions whose work serves cultural preservation, dialogue, education and international cooperation.

The Order stands as a symbol of continuity, responsibility and service beyond generations.
